India needed 100 runs from their final 10 overs – with five wickets in hand – and they delivered, defeating West Indies by two wickets in the final over of their one-day international after chasing down their strong total of 311-6

After winning the toss and opting to bat first in front of their home fans in Port of Spain, West Indies put together a terrific innings, led by opener Shai Hope.

Hope was the match's top-scorer with 115 from 135 deliveries, hitting three balls over the rope among his 11 total boundaries. He was supported well by Nicholas Pooran (74 from 77 deliveries), Kyle Mayers (39 from 23 deliveries) and Sharmah Brooks (35 from 36).

Shardul Thakur was India's top performer with the ball, taking 54-3 from his seven overs.

It was a well-rounded chase from the visitors, with eight players scoring at least nine runs, led by Axar Patel's 65 not-out from 35 deliveries and Shreyas Iyer's 63 from 71 deliveries.

Five different West Indies bowlers took at least one wicket, with Mayers (48-2 from 7.4 overs) and Alzarri Joseph (46-2 from 10 overs) the pick of the bunch.

With a dozen overs remaining in India's chase, live odds had West Indies as strong favourites, but an inspired knock from Patel proved to be the catalyst for a gutsy fightback.

Patel picks India up off the canvas

The visitors' prospects of a successful run chase were dashed when Sanju Samson was run-out on 54 to leave India at 205-5 after 39 overs.

That wicket brought Patel to the crease, and he would single-handedly drag his side to the finish line. Eight of the 35 deliveries he faced were sent to the boundary, with five maximums, including the game-winning six with his team needing six runs from the final three balls.

Happy hunting ground

With the win, India have secured their fifth consecutive bilateral ODI series against West Indies in the Caribbean, and now boast wins in 11 of the past 12 total ODI fixtures between the two sides.

India's last ODI loss against West Indies came back in December 2019, when they played in Chennai.
