Men's singles head coach Misbun Sidek is expecting young players such as Lee Jii Zia, Leong Jun Hao and Tan Jia Wei to shoulder Malaysia's singles challenge in future.
He said the three young players would be carrying the singles’ challenge in future team tournaments including the Thomas Cup.
"These junior players could be polished as they have the potential," he commented after yesterday's 1-3 loss to Indonesia in the Thomas Cup quarter-finals.
"With proper guidance and exposure, these singles’ players would be ready to carry the national duty at the next Thomas Cup."
Misbun said this was the likely scenario after the withdrawal of Lee Chong Wei and praised Jii Zia, who was fielded in the current tournament, for proving to be a correct choice.
"I think he [Jii Zia] will be ready in two years' time," he said, adding he liked Jii Zia's style and rhythm as displayed at the tournament.
Meanwhile, the national doubles coaching team will be conducting an in-depth study on the failure of doubles players especially in rubber sets.
In the loss to Indonesia, both doubles pairs of Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong and Aaron Chia-Teo Ee Yi were defeated.
Head coach Cheah Soon Kit said the study was needed to find out why Malaysian doubles players faltered at critical moments.
"There were setbacks, so we have to step up on this issue on what happened to the players, what they were think during that time [the third set] and why they were unable to keep up the momentum," he said.
