Malaysian shuttler Goh Jin Wei created history by winning a gold medal at the 2018 Youth Olympics on Sunday.

The 2015 world junior champion defeated Wan Zhiyi 16-21, 21-13, 21-19 in the girls' singles final at the Tecnopolis in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

In doing so, the 18-year-old became the first athelete to win a Youth Olympic Games gold medal for Malaysia, and the second Malaysian to emerge victorious at the Youth Olympics since shuttler Cheam June Wei, who won mixed doubles gold under the Mixed-NOCs flag in 2014.

She started the tournament with flying colours by beating Indonesia's Maharani Sekar Batari, Sweden's Ashwathi Pillai and Germany's Ann-Kathrin Spoeri in Group C.

Goh then advanced to the final by overcoming Vietnam's Vu Thi Anh Thu in the quarter-finals and first seed Phittayaporn Chaiwan of Thailand in the semi-finals.
