Kyle Verreynne has credited leaving X as a big reason for his impressive recent batting performances for South Africa.

Verreynne scored his third test century of the season, with team-mate Ryan Rickleton posting a score of 259 to leave them in a commanding position over Pakistan in the second Test. At the end of day two, the hosts restricted the tourists to 64-3 after posting 615 in their first innings.

The wicket-keeper batsman has now become the only South African to score four test centuries in the 2020s, a major turnaround from the beginning of his Test career.

Verreynne averaged just 28.60 over 14 tests between June 2021 and January 2023, which led to him subsequently being dropped from the squad, but believes a renewed focus after moving away from social media has undoubtedly contributed to his revival in test match cricket.

"Towards the end of that first stint of [my] Test career, I sort of got caught up in technique and what you guys are saying on Twitter [X]," Verreynne said.

"Since then, I've deleted Twitter, and now every time I go out there, the only thing I care about is getting runs. I don't think I'm really scared to get out anymore."

The 27-year-old admitted that he struggled early on in his innings when Pakistan took the new ball, but started to thrive once he could take the short ball on and go on the offensive.

"When I came in, they had just taken the new ball, so it was quite challenging for that first period, and then I got a short ball that I hit for six and that got me ticking a little bit," he said.

"For some reason, it just felt to me like they were going to go short. I premeditated a little bit and just tried to hit it because there's also a short side of the field."

He has levelled Denis Lindsay (1966-67) and AB de Villiers (2012-13 and 2013-14) for the most Test hundreds by a South African wicketkeeper in a season.
