Azeem Fahmi narrowly missed out on a podium finish at the 2022 World Athletics U20 Championships as he finished fifth in the men's 100m final in Cali, Colombia.

The 18-year-old, who made headlines on Monday with his new national record of 10.09s, only managed 10.14s this time.

As expected, Botswana's Letsile Tebogo (9.91s) took the spotlight as he crossed the line in record time at the youth level.

Jamaican sprinter Bouwahjgie Nkrumie took home silver, while South Africa's Benjamin Richardson (10.12s) edged ahead of three-time Southeast Asian gold medalist Puripol Boonson by the smallest of margin for the bronze medal.

Azeem, who would be in action again for the men's 200m event, finished ahead of Japan's Hiroki Yanagita, American Laurenz Colbert and Cuba's Reynaldo Espinosa.

He had advanced to the final with a time of 10.19s in the semi-finals earlier in the day.
