Malaysian men’s doubles duo Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong announced on Saturday they would be going their separate ways after seven years of partnership.

The world number 13 pair, who were combined together after their outstanding performance at the 2014 Thomas Cup to lead Malaysia to the final, will now seek greener pastures with different partners.

“Thank you for being my partner for the past seven years. I would not have achieved the level of my badminton career without you, notably the Rio Olympics silver medal and world number one.

“I am thankful for all the support for on and off the court, and I wish you all the best in the future,” said Tan in a heartfelt social media posting.

Goh-Tan will always be remembered for coming within a point of winning gold for the country at the Rio Olympics.

They held two match points against Chinese pair Fu Haifeng-Zhang Nan, but were overcome with nerves to squander the opportunity and settle for silver.

Nonetheless, the pair produced many other outstanding moments that made them a fearsome pair, which included sitting at the top of the men’s doubles world rankings in 2016.

They also won gold at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, and clinched several titles on the World Tour circuit by winning the Malaysia and Denmark Open, as well as the 2016 Superseries Finals.

This year they got off to a good start too, reaching the final of the Thailand Open 1 before narrowly losing to Tokyo Olympics gold medalists Wang Chi-lin-Lee Yang.

Tan is set to partner Low Juan Shen after this.
