Pemain beregu campuran profesional negara, Goh Liu Ying, berharap penganjuran Sukan Olimpik Tokyo, Julai depan dapat diteruskan memandangkan ia mungkin menjadi penampilan terakhirnya dalam temasya terbesar dunia itu.
Liu Ying dan pasangannya, Chan Peng Soon, 33, mencipta sensasi dalam edisi di Rio pada 2016 apabila hampir memenangi pingat emas sebelum tunduk dalam aksi final kepada wakil Indonesia, Tontowi Ahmad-Liliyana Natsir.
Selepas hampir lima tahun, pasangan negara itu, yang kini bergerak secara profesional, mahu sekurang-kurangnya beraksi dalam edisi terakhir mereka sebelum menggantungkan raket.
Bagaimanapun, dengan keadaan darurat di negara tuan rumah, Jepun, berikutan pandemik COVID-19, ia menimbulkan persoalan mengenai penganjuran temasya itu tetapi Liu Ying masih berharap dapat beraksi dalam edisi yang mungkin menjadi yang terakhir buatnya memandangkan usianya akan mencecah 32 tahun bulan ini.
"Sebagai atlet, saya memang berharap ia akan dapat dijalankan kerana ia mungkin menjadi Sukan Olimpik terakhir saya," katanya kepada wartawan Astro Arena, Muiz Aziz.
"Saya memang berharap ia tidak dibatalkan tetapi keadaan di Tokyo juga agak sukar kerana kes (positif COVID-19) di sana lebih tinggi daripada di sini.
"Saya juga ada mendengar pasukan perubatan mereka juga sudah tidak tahan.
"Kalau ia dijalankan, sewaktu itu akan ada ramai orang akan datang ke sana, jadi mungkin juga ada yang akan membawa virus yang telah bermutasi.
"Jadi, walaupun sudah divaksin, ia mungkin masih belum selamat.
"Banyak yang perlu dipertimbangkan. Kalau boleh saya berharap ia tidak akan dibatalkan kerana ia memang amat penting.
"Tahap terakhir dalam sasaran setiap atlet adalah Sukan Olimpik.
"Walaupun sudah dua atau tiga kali (membuat penampilan), ia masih pentas terbesar buat setiap atlet," katanya.
