Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik fell short of clinching their first All-England title after the national men’s doubles pair lost 16-21, 16-21 against a well playing Fajar Alfian-Rian Ardianto who defended their title.
This is the Malaysian pair’s second All-England final defeat, having lost to another Indonesian pair Hendra Setiawan-Mohammad Ahsan five years ago.
Chia-Soh were full of nerves in the opening stages of the first game and conceded several unforced errors to allow the Indonesians to race to a five point lead at the interval, which they maintained until the end for the lead.
The Malaysians improved in the second game and only a point separated both pairs going into the interval.
But it was the Indonesians who came away deserved winners after their relentless attacking pressure proved too much for Chia-Soh.
This defeat has also means the country’s top men’s doubles pair have lost six times in major World Tour finals’.
Other results saw South Korean women’s doubles pair Baek Ha-na-Lee Soo-hee beat Nami Matsuyama-Chiharu Shida 21-19, 11-21, 21-17 for the first title.
Carolina Marin claimed the women’s singles title after her opponent Akane Yamaguchi retired in the second game, while Jonatan Christie earned Indonesia their first title of the evening in the men’s singles.
Christie beat Anthony Ginting 21-15, 21-14, before Zheng Si Wei-Huang Ya Qiong secured the mixed doubles title after they overcame Yuta Watanabe-Arisa Higashino in a top seeded encounter.
