Vincent Kompany says Bayern Munich should have killed off the game against Borussia Monchengladbach much earlier than they did.

Bayern dominated throughout the game at Borussia Park, but only came away with a 1-0 win thanks to Harry Kane's 68th-minute penalty, his 15th goal of the campaign.

Kompany's side had a bagful of chances, including for Thomas Muller and Leon Goretzka in the first half. Alphonso Davies and Serge Gnabry had late chances to wrap up the points too, but were denied by Moritz Nicolas.

Bayern have now scored in each of their last 23 games in the Bundesliga, netting 64 goals in that run. However, they had 23 shots against Gladbach, accumulating 3.27 expected goals (xG), with Kompany insisting their win margin should have been ever higher.

"It is a very difficult away game, and we were just back from holidays," Kompany told a press conference.

"If you had the chances we had today you would want to score two or three goals to kill off the game. We never did that."

Bayern had lost five of their previous nine away games at Gladbach, more than against any other team in the same period, but their hosts were toothless on Saturday, particularly in the first half.

In a one-sided opening half, Gladbach did not have a single effort on goal, and they finished the game without a shot on target, despite five second-half attempts.

Nicolas was the standout performer as Bayern kept Gladhbach's defence under pressure, with the goalkeeper making nine saves.

"What I liked was the attitude and mentality to keep fighting," Kompany added. "In the final 10 minutes, things could still happen. but we kept our cool.

"We could again have scored a few more goals, but the concentration of the team was really good."

Kane is back at the top of the Bundesliga scoring charts thanks to his penalty, pulling clear of Omar Marmoush, who had scored his 14th goal of the season earlier on Saturday.

It is the fifth time that the England captain has opened the scoring in the Bundesliga this season, while he has successfully converted his last 11 penalties in the competition.

Bayern regained their four-point lead over Bayer Leverkusen at the top of the league table with this win, something that will please Kane, who had spoken of his desire to win a first trophy of his career prior to the game.

"It's true that, so far, I won individual accomplishments as a top scorer or best player," Kane told France Football.

"I start every season with the goal to win a trophy and I am not satisfied with being distinguished only on an individual level.

"I'm only 31. I think the best Harry Kane is yet to come. I'm very confident about this, and very confident that the second part of my career, the one which is now beginning, will be rich in major trophies. And when I hang up my boots, it will no longer be a topic."
