Bundesliga club Hoffenheim have signed striker Gift Orban from Lyon for a reported €9million.

The 22-year-old Nigerian has scored two goals in five matches so far this season, having made just three starts.

He has played just 259 minutes and converted two of his six shots (33.33%).

Orban joined Lyon from Genk in January 2024 after a prolific time in Belgium, where he scored 32 goals in 52 competitive matches.

However, with Lyon needing to make sales amid financial difficulties, they have cashed in on Orban, reportedly for a fee lower than what they paid Genk last year.

“In Gift Orban we have found exactly the fast striker with good depth that we were looking for,” said Andreas Schicker, managing director of sport at Hoffenheim.

“Gift has repeatedly demonstrated his goal threat and his joy of playing in his previous positions, so we are convinced that his skills will give our team greater variability in attack.”

Lyon were handed a provisional relegation to Ligue 2 in November, which will come into effect at the end of the season unless they improve their situation.

Orban is already the third player to leave this month, with Anthony Lopes joining Nantes on a free transfer and Jeffinho departing to Botafogo, where he had been on loan, for €5.3m.
