Skuad kendalian Hansi Flick itu tidak pernah mendahului sebarang perlawanan liga sejak Oktober lalu dan hampir dikejutkan dengan kekalahan kedua musim ini jika Danny Latza menewaskan penjaga gol Bayern, Manuel Neuer, pada awal babak kedua.
Mainz pada ketika itu sedang mendahului 2-0 hasil jaringan Jonathan Burkardt dan Alexander Hack dalam babak pertama tetapi Joshua Kimmich dan Leroy Sane kembali mengikat kedudukan dalam tempoh lima minit.
Percubaan Robin Quaison terkena palang sebagai amaran bahawa Mainz masih berada dalam perlawanan itu tetapi Bayern jelas pasukan yang lebih baik.
Jaringan Niklas Sule yang terbias serta gol berganda Robert Lewandowski -- gol pertama merupakan jaringan penalti -- memastikan satu lagi kemenangan memihak pasukan juara bertahan itu.
