Welson Sim collected gold medals in the three events he took part at the 2018 Malaysia Open Swimming Championship at the National Aquatic Centre in Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur.
The top Malaysian swimmer closed his outing at the 61st Malaysia Open with his third gold medal for Sarawak via the men’s 1,500m freestyle with a time of 16:18.35s.
The silver medal went to Kuala Lumpur’s Wong Jun Bin in 16:19.93s, followed by Wong Venn Chieh (16:39.49s) of Sabah.
"I was expected to win, but the time was rather embarrassing as I clocked better time in the preliminary round.
"I am still trying not to exert too much on my injury," said the 21-year-old, who will be heading for Mare Nostrum Swimming championship in Europe in June.
Despite carrying shoulder and leg injuries, he was also able to win the 400m and 200m freestyle events.
Meanwhile, Johor swimmer Wong Fu Kang, who bagged a gold medal in the men's 50m breaststroke in 28.76s, said he was satisfied with his performance in the meet.
“I want break all my previous best records this year and will certainly give my best in all tournaments,” said Wong, who will also be competing at the Mare Nostrum meet.
The silver medal went to Foong Wei Tze of Melaka (29.25s), while Jaxter Janzen Chua (29.70s) of the Philippines won the bronze.
Also claiming a goal medal was Keith Lim Kit Sern of Kuala Lumpur after he clocked 23.59s in the men's 50m freestyle, with silver and bronze medals going to Selangor's Chan Yang (23.72s) and Chan Jie (23.83s).
The four-day championship saw Hong Kong top the medal tally with 20 gold, followed by Selangor and Johor with seven and four gold medals respectively.
