Joe Root has been recalled for England's Champions Trophy squad and the ODI series against India, though Ben Stokes was omitted due to injury.

Brendon McCullum has named the first two squads of his new era as England's multi-format head coach, joining his Test duties with limited-over action.

Root has not featured in white-ball international action since the World Cup in November last year but returns to the fold after moving back up to number one in the Test batting rankings.

Red-ball captain Stokes has not been considered for selection due to a hamstring injury suffered in the third Test defeat against New Zealand earlier in December.

McCullum's 15-man squad includes eight players who have already appeared in Test match action this year, signalling an attempt to unify the two formats.

Jofra Archer, Mark Wood and Gus Atkinson are joined by Saqib Mahmood and Brydon Carse in a white-ball squad boasting significant pace in their bowling attack.

Jamie Overton was another to get the nod in the bowling department, though left-armer Reece Topley and all-rounder Sam Curran were among the notable absentees.

Adil Rashid will lead the spinners, with Root, Liam Livingstone and Jacob Bethell – who will go to his first major tournament after impressing for the Test side – as backup options.

Phil Salt and Ben Duckett will likely open with Wills Jacks left out entirely, while it remains to be seen where McCullum will utilise captain Jos Buttler for the three-match ODI series against India before the tournament starts in Pakistan.

Rehan Ahmed will only travel to India for the five-match T20I series, which Root will sit out of, as McCullum prepares for his first white-ball outings in charge of England's international side.
