Jasprit Bumrah struck with the final ball of the day after India were dismantled by Australia in Sydney.

Bumrah dismissed Usman Khawaja for the sixth time in the series to leave Australia on 9-1 at stumps at the SCG.

However, despite that late bright spark, it was largely a day to forget for India, who were bowled out for just 185.

The tourists had left out captain Rohit Sharma had just three batters surpass 20 in another disappointing team innings.

Scott Boland led Australia's charge with the ball, taking 4-31, while Mitchell Starc chipped in with 3-49 and Pat Cummins took 2-37 in front of a 47,556-strong crowd, the biggest day one attendance for a Test at the SCG since 1976.

Starc sent KL Rahul packing for four inside five overs, before Boland dismissed the dangerous Yashasvi Jaiswal on 10.

Nathan Lyon's sole wicket came when Shubman Gill (20) was caught by Steve Smith, with Boland then taking out Virat Kohli (17), India's top scorer Pant (40) and Nitish Kumar Reddy (0), with the latter two dismissals coming one after the other.

Starc pinned Ravindra Jadeja (26) lbw and sent Prasidh Krishna (three) back to the pavilion, and Cummins ended the efforts of Washington Sundar (14) and Bumrah (22).

Bumrah's teasing delivery saw Khawaja edge to Rahul, with Sam Konstas – a star of the fourth Test – in place for Australia heading into day two.

Data Debrief: Sydney stronghold

Australia are gunning for their first Test series victory over India since 2015 - and the omens are good for them at the SCG, where they have lost only one of their 13 matches against India in the longest format, way back in January 1978.

In fact, Australia have lost just one of their last 23 Tests at the venue in total (W15 D7) – an innings and 83-run loss against England in 2011.

Smith, meanwhile, is just 38 short of scoring 10,000 Test runs - only three Australians (Ricky Ponting, Allan Border and Steve Waugh) have previously achieved the feat. He has plundered at least 70 runs in all of his four Test innings against India at the SCG.
