Anas Zul Amirul Sidi came first in the men's 100m freestyle S14 to secure the first gold medal for the Malaysia para-swimming team at the 9th ASEAN Para Games on Tuesday.

Not only did he beat defending champion Benson Tan, who finished second, he also shattered the Singaporean para-swimmer's Games record of 1:02.88s set in 2014 by clocking 59.79s.

"This gold is for my dad [Zul Amirul Sidi Abdullah]," said the 17-year-old.

"He is my idol because before I became a national swimmer, my dad struggled but remained motivated to ensure I can be successful."

Compatriot Zadrian Chan completed the podium with a time of 1:01.70s.

Not losing out to Anas in winning gold were Yoong Chung Wei, who equalled the Games record of 30.01s in the men's 50m butterfly S14, and Jamery Siga, who finished ahead of Myanmar’s Maung Maung Soe and team-mate Nur Syaiful Zulkafli in the men's 50m butterfly S5.

James Wong Tien Yu also contributed a bronze medal in the men's 100m breaststroke SB8.

In addition to the three gold and three bronze medals, there were two Malaysian silver medals on the second day of swimming events thanks to Julius Jaranding in the men's 100m freestyle S12 and Jamery in the men's 200m freestyle S5.
