Former national shuttler Liew Daren has become the latest individual to be charged for involvement in betting. In line with that, Stadium Astro recounts some of the previous high-profile betting related cases.

Zulfadli Zulkiffli & Tan Chun Seang

In 2018, Malaysian singles shuttlers Zulfadli Zulkiffli and Tan Chun Seang were suspended 15 and 20 years respectively by the world body for betting and match-fixing misconducts.

In total, the pair committed 53 violations in the 2012 Code of Conduct in Relation to Betting Wagering and Irregular Match Results.

The ban ultimately ended the careers of both men.

Three Indonesian Players Banned for Life

In March this year, three Indonesia shuttlers were banned for life, while five others were suspended after they were found guilty of match-fixing and betting by the Badminton World Federation (BWF).

The mastermind perpetrator was Hendra Tandjaya, a former professional mixed doubles shuttler who offered money to his on-court partner to fix their matches.

The scandal spanned over three years from 2014-2017 over various BWF tournaments, where Hendra and his partner were involved in both match-fixing and betting.

Anders Antonsen fires coach for betting

Antonsen had in August fired his coach Joachim Persson with immediate effect after catching him placing bets on other matches in a tournament.

The world number two men’s singles star went on to report the incident to the world body on Persson, who had previously been in trouble back in 2019 for a match-fixing scandal.

Antonsen later appointed his brother Kasper Antonsen as his new coach, a move that paid instant dividends after the shuttler won the Denmark Open and China Masters.

The 27-year-old ended the season with a silver medal at the World Tour Finals.
