Liew Daren progressed to the second round of the 2018 BWF World Championships with a straight set win over 13th seed Jonatan Christie on Tuesday.
The independent shuttler, who is Malaysia's only men's singles shuttler at the tournament after the withdrawal of Lee Chong Wei, grabbed the 21-12, 21-16 win in 34 minutes to avenge his loss to the Indonesian at the Malaysian Open in June.
Except for Lee and South Korea's Son Wan Ho who pulled out due to injuries, Jonatan was the only seeded player not to make it out of the first round, with the likes of Viktor Axelsen, Chen Long and Kento Momota progressing with ease.
Liew will next face Misha Zilberman, whom he beat 18-21, 21-16, 23-21 in their only meeting at the Indian Open in January.
It was an overall good day for Malaysia as all but mixed doubles pair Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing and women's singles shuttler Soniia Cheah made it to the second or third round.
