Yeoh Kay Bin was announced as Lee Zii Jia’s latest head coach on Christmas Day, following the departure of Wong Tat Meng. Stadium Astro looks at the background and achievement of the former national shuttler.

Beat Chong Wei to win his first international title

Yeoh, 44, reached four finals at the previous international badminton circuit and collected his first silverware by beating a fresh Lee some 21 years ago.

Yeoh beat Lee 15-5, 15-13 to win the 2003 India Satellite title.

It would take another seven years before he won another title at the Romanian International.

Besides that, Yeoh also finished second at the 1998 World Junior Championships and took bronze at the 2007 Asian Championships.

Coached locally at a badminton academy

Prior to joining Team LZJ, Yeoh was a coach at an academy with his former national team-mate K.Yogendran, who is now one of the national singles coaches.

Under that academy, Yeoh, Yogendran and another former national shuttler R. Manojkumar managed shuttlers from Africa & Mauritius with the aim of getting those players into the Olympics.

That academy, which is based in Petaling Jaya, is also a popular venue for social players.

Spent 7 years in China under the legendary Li Mao

Perhaps one of the driving factors that spurred Lee to seek Yeoh’s services is the fact the Perak-born carved out his coaching career in China under the legendary Li Mao.

For the record, Li Mao played an important role in charting Chong Wei’s early progress back in 2005, before the Chinese supremo went on to elevate the South Korean team.

Yeoh spent seven years in China from 2014-2021 under Li Mao, before returning home to coach at the local academy alongside Yogendran.
