Super League leaders St Helens ended their regular season on a dramatic high as Danny Richardson's sensational kick secured a 14-12 win over Warrington Wolves.

Warrington led for the majority of the match and looked good value for an eye-catching away win, but tries from Ben Barba and Jonny Lomax coupled with Richardson's trusty boot drew Saints level.

A series of late scuffed drop goal attempts allowed Richardson to be the hero with a 55-yard penalty that he executed to perfection as the hooter sounded.

Third-placed Warrington drew first blood when Michael Cooper, surrounded by home players, teed up Daryl Clark to charge over, but that proved to be the only try of a frantic first half.

Tyrone Roberts converted and later kicked a penalty, with the visitors able to keep St Helens scoreless before the break for the first time this season.

It took Saints less than a minute after the restart to forge a breakthrough, though, as Barba found himself open for a 23rd try of the campaign.

The sides traded further kicks before Lomax dotted down, Richardson's conversion drawing the hosts level, and a late Tom Lineham tackle prompted tempers to rise.

Roberts and Stefan Ratchford scuffed dismal drop goal efforts wide in the closing stages and so Richardson was granted one last opportunity, which he took with aplomb to spark jubilant celebrations.
