McGregor didn't deserve attack - Khabib stablemate Cormier

Daniel Cormier says Conor McGregor did not deserve to be attacked in the octagon but can understand the fury that led Khabib Nurmagomedov to spark a mass brawl at UFC 229.

McGregor was attacked after tapping out to lose the lightweight title bout in the fourth round, with two individuals climbing in from ringside to confront the Irishman.

Nurmagomedov, meanwhile, leapt out of the cage in pursuit of Dillon Danis - a member of McGregor's team - and Cormier was praised for his role in calming the 30-year-old.

The melee was the culmination of a history of bad blood between the pair, with McGregor having attacked a bus carrying Nurmagomedov at a media day for UFC 223 in April - an incident that was used in promotional material for Saturday's fight.

But Cormier - the current light heavyweight and heavyweight champion and a stablemate of Nurmagomedov at American Kickboxing Academy - does not believe McGregor's past misdemeanours or verbal barbs gave the Russian licence to cause chaos around the octagon in Las Vegas.

"Hey guys, two wrongs don't make it right," Cormier tweeted. "Conor didn't deserve that. No one did.

"But some things aren't for fight promotion. Religion, family, country. Throwing stuff in Brooklyn.

"For Khabib it wasn't fight promotion, it was really personal. Diff culture man. Sucks"

UFC president Dana White, who warned Nurmagomedov that he could yet be stripped of his belt, earlier commented that McGregor had opted against pressing charges against his attackers, which was backed up by Cormier.

"Conor didn't press charges, that tells me that he understands," he added. "Look, I don't like him, he doesn't like me. S*** happens. Kinda gangster s*** by Conor.

"He showed lot of heart tonight! Crazy night. Wish we were talking bout the fight."
