Feuz edges out rival Svindal in Wengen, Brignone wins in Austria

The oldest and longest race of the FIS Alpine Skiing World Cup brought plenty of excitement in Switzerland, with Feuz just snatching victory by 0.18seconds.

It gives the Swiss speedster a second win of the season and closes the gap to Svindal to just 58 points ahead of the sixth race in Kitzbuhel next weekend.

The pair both have two wins apiece from the five completed races so far and look set to battle it out for downhill gold at the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.

Feuz was first out of the gate on Saturday in crisp alpine sunshine and his time of 2:26.50 was too good for anyone else, only Svindal getting close to denying him.

The Norwegian had to settle for second, with reigning Olympic champion Matthias Mayer completing the top three.

It was a disappointing day for Dominik Paris and Kjetil Jansrud, though, as they finished eighth and ninth respectively, over a second behind Feuz.

Over in Austria, Federica Brignone was celebrating super-G victory in Bad Kleinkirchheim after changes to the schedule.

Originally, the third downhill race of the World Cup was due to take place on Saturday, but rain in the build-up made the top of the course difficult, leading to a switch with the super-G race.

Brignone was not affected by a day less preparation and stormed to victory with a brilliant, direct run to cross the line in 1:09.80s.

That was enough to deny Lara Gut her first win since returning from a knee injury, the Swiss finishing second on the podium with a time 0.18s slower than Brignone after hitting a gate in the closing stages.

Cornelia Hutter took the final spot in the top three, while discipline leader Tina Weirather could only finish seventh.
