For perhaps the first time in his career, Lee Zii Jia has opened up about the struggles he faces as a national athlete and highly sought after figure.
Stadium Astro highlights three main talking points from his honest and self-reflective post.
Surrounding himself with the right people
Lee admitted he could not open up to many people when he was dealing with his injuries, and had to deal with mental and emotional pressure.
“It got to a point where I became afraid of facing certain situations, afraid of certain conversations and afraid of pulled back into the same emotional struggles again,” he said.
The shuttler insisted that many of the decisions made were still his, but he had ended up hurting others due to that.
Perhaps now, the Kedahan has a clearer picture on the people he can actually rely on for advice and support regarding his career.
Standing up for himself
Lee’s second main point echoes his first, which is to stand firm for what he believes in.
“If I still want to continue, then I have to stand up for myself. I have to fight for my freedom, my right to make decisions and a better environment for myself. Even if I fail, at least it will be my own choice, and I will take responsibility for it,” he said.
His explanation indicates a clear decision to take control of his career, and not allow others to interfere. While suggestions from his closest friends and family is welcomed, Lee is right to make the final call on his own.
Not giving up on his career
Lee had admitted his emotional struggles had left him contemplating even retiring, but ultimately, he realized his love for the game surpasses everything else.
“No matter how many low moments are still ahead, and no matter how much doubt and failure I still have to face, I will keep going until the day I cannot play anymore.”
To realize that his ambition and love for badminton is the only thing that matters is a victory in itself.
With that reality check in mind, he can now focus on working hard to achieve his goals without the unnecessary distractions.
