Cronulla Sharks have been handed a massive fine and are set to let a player leave due to salary cap breaches.

The Sharks were hit with a fine of 1.25 million Australian dollars – 500,000 AUD suspended – due to several breaches dating back to 2013.

They are set to lose a player due to a penalty of 707,000 AUD being imposed on their cap across the 2019 and 2020 seasons.

Former Sharks head coach Shane Flanagan has had his registration cancelled after breaching conditions of his 2014 suspension.

"We cannot afford to ever have an off-season like this again," NRL chief executive Todd Greenberg said in a statement on Friday.

"I would hope that the sanctions being handed down today will remind clubs and players that there are significant consequences for not complying with the standards and rules we set for our game."

Wests Tigers were also punished after not disclosing an ambassador agreement with Robbie Farah.

The club's proposed fine of 750,000 AUD has been halved, while a salary cap penalty of 639,000 AUD – the value of Farah's agreement – will be spread over the 2019 and 2020 seasons.

Tigers chief Justin Pascoe apologised and was handed a six-month ban backdated to December.

The NRL refused to register Zane Musgrove for the Tigers as he fights indecent assault charges.

Meanwhile, Canterbury Bulldogs prop Dylan Napa has been fined 10 per cent of his 2019 salary after lewd videos featuring him were published.

North Queensland Cowboys veteran Scott Bolton is banned for 10 weeks and was fined five per cent of his salary for the year after pleading guilty to common assault.

Earlier, the Manly Sea Eagles' Dylan Walker was stood down by the NRL under its no-fault policy as he fights assault charges.
