Widnes Vikings' bid to return to Super League will be led by a new head coach after Francis Cummins' departure was confirmed.

Widnes' seven-year stint in Super League was ended when they finished seventh in the Qualifiers as Cummins failed to turn around their fortunes having taken charge on an interim basis in May.

The 41-year-old was in charge of 15 matches, only one of which Widnes won, and he has left the club along with coach Eamon O'Carroll.

Cummins had previously worked as Denis Betts' assistant with the Vikings and was in charge of Bradford Bulls from 2013 to 2014.
