After a full month of comprehensive training, national shuttler Ng Tze Yong is determined to accomplish two personal goals in a busy year that is set to unfold with the upcoming Malaysia Open (Jan 9-14).
Besides looking to qualify for the Paris Olympics, the 23-year-old has also set sights to break into the world top 10 this year.
Both his targets are well within sight, and with consistency to his ever improving game, Ng could see his wishes come true sooner than he imagines.
Should he do so, Ng will become only the fourth shuttler in the last decade to have broken into the world top 10.
The other three who have done so are Lee Chong Wei, Liew Daren and Lee Zii Jia.
“Firstly I hope to stay injury-free and of course to make my Olympics debut. It’s also important for me to break into the world top 10. I have been training hard in the last month, and I hope that these preparations will pay off in my performance.
“There are a few days left before the Malaysia Open, and I am in the midst of making the final preparations,” he said.
The world number 15 will take on Koki Watanabe in the opening round of the Super 1000 event at the Axiata Arena.
When asked about the match, Ng simply put it down to “No one wants to lose.”
He has played Watanabe once, losing to the Japanese on his home turf at the Japan Open last year.
But with an expected strong home support, Ng is expected to turn the tables this time around.
