It will be fascinating to witness how much Ng Tze Yong’s fitness has improved at the Malaysia Open (Jan 9-14) after the national men’s singles shuttler sought the help of Lee Chong Wei’s former physical trainer.
The 23-year-old has been working with Roesdi Abdul Ghani who helped Lee amass a superior physical fitness for more than a decade which became a key asset of his game.
Working on the national number one’s fitness is a key if he is to flourish this year, beginning with the first round clash against Koki Watanabe.
National coaching director Rexy Mainaky believes the special training programme created for Ng will prove fruitful.
“Roesdi used to be Chong Wei’s physical trainer, and we are confident his experience and knowledge will be priceless Ng.
Roesdi has assessed his physical condition for two months now, and we can see a difference already.
"Ng will continue working with Roesdi in the lead-up to the Paris Olympics,” said the Indonesian.
National men’s singles chief coach Hendrawan is confident the world number 15 will display the fruits of his labour in a week’s time.
“We believe there will be a difference. Ng is a different player compared to Chong Wei or even Zii Jia, where his strength was not his asset. We have worked with him significantly to improve on this aspect,” said Hendrawan.
Ng himself sparred a couple of times with Chong Wei as he builds momentum towards the anticipated 2024 season opener starting next Tuesday.
The Johor-born is aiming to progress past the second round where he lost out last year after an intense three game battle at the hands of Kodai Naraoka.
