It looks like a potential Lee Zii Jia vs Viktor Axelsen clash could be one of the main attractions of the upcoming Thomas Cup (April 28-May 5) after Malaysia were drawn against Denmark, Hong Kong & Algeria.

The national contingent will do battle in Group D of the biennial event that will take place in Chengdu, China in just over a month’s time.

The top two teams of each group will qualify to the quarter-finals, and on paper Malaysia will battle it out against Denmark and Hong Kong to qualify to the knockout rounds.

But the main draw of Group D will surely be the contest between Lee and Axelsen.

Both shuttlers last met at last year’s Sudirman Cup, but their match ended after mere minutes when Axelsen pulled out through injury.

Malaysia went on to beat Denmark 3-1 in that quarter-finals match-up.

But it will be a different proposition this time around with Anders Antonsen, Rasmus Gemke and Kim Astrup-Anders Rasmussen in the mix.

Hong Kong will also be a tough test, especially in the men’s singles with Angus Ng Ka Long and Lee Cheuk Yiu capable of getting the points.

In the Uber Cup, Malaysia were drawn against Thailand, Chinese Taipei & Australia.

Malaysia were also paired with Thailand in the 2022 edition, losing 4-1 and ultimately failed to make it out of the group.
