Malaysia may have lost 3-1 against Japan in the Uber Cup, but the solitary point delivered through women’s doubles pair Low Zi Yu-Noraqilah Maisarah have gained national interest.
This is because this young pair delivered one of the shock upsets of the competition after the world number 143 overcame world number seven pair Rin Iwanaga-Kie Nakanishi 21-17, 12-21, 21-19.

So who are this young pair? Stadium Astro gives some insight to them.
Combined age of 36
Low is only 16, while Noraqilah is three years her senior at 18.
Their combined age of 34 makes even makes them younger than some elite shuttlers, most notably than Chinese Taipei star Chou Tien-chen, who is 36.
Low-Noraqilah may be teenagers, but are performing like seasoned pros who can handle the pressure.
This was evident when they produced the match-winning point against Turkiye in the first group match, when the scores were locked at 2-2.
Low had battled a thyroid condition
Considered one of the country’s brightest prospects, Low saw her fledgling career halted last year due to a thyroid condition which limited her ability to train full-time.
The teenager could not even be involved with national assignments and had to return to her home state of Johor to train with the Johor Badminton Association.
But despite her health issues, Low is one of the brightest junior talents in the country having won the World Junior Championship silver medal with Noraqilah, as well as winning the Slovak Open last year with Danea Sofea.
Backhand smash proves Noraqilah killer instinct
Noraqilah may be petite in stature, but has all the makings to become a force in the women’s doubles.
Against Rin-Kie, the Malacca-born produced one of the shots of the tournament with a fantastic backhand smash.
Setting up the winner with a deft touch at the front court, Noraqilah flew through the air to sensationally win the point after Rin had lunged desperately to return the shuttle.
The confident smile from the teenager afterwards summed up her point.
