Malaysia notched their second win at the Thomas Cup with a 5-0 demolition of the United States on Tuesday, which confirmed their progress to the quarter-finals.

There was an overhaul to the line-up that overcame England by the same score on Monday, with only Ng Tze Yong fielded for two consecutive times.

He retained his spot as the second men’s singles, with Liew Daren taking over Lee Zii Jia as the first men’s singles.

Liew faced some resistance from world number 222 Enrico Asuncion, before eventually chalking up a 21-13, 21-16 victory in 37 minutes for the lead.

Ng was next up, and he only needed 30 minutes to beat Don Henley Averia 21-11, 21-9.

Aidil Sholeh was fielded as the third men’s singles as the youngster confirmed the outright victory with a 21-16, 21-17 success over William Hu.

“It was not as straightforward as I expected, as I was playing against the drift in the first game. It took me a while to find my rhythm, but I’m happy to have contributed a point after being given a chance to do so,” said Aidil.

Chia Weijie was given a run-out with Goh Sze Fei in the first men’s doubles, and the scratch pairing duly delivered the fourth point with a 21-12, 21-8 over Adrian King-Sun-Henry Tang.

Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi then added gloss to the score with a 21-16, 21-8 win over Asuncion-Hu.

Malaysia next face Japan, who overcame England in the other Group D encounter, to determine the top spot on Wednesday.
