Ng Tze Yong is making steady progress from his long-standing back injury, but is still not fit for competitive action and is set to miss out on next month’s Malaysia Open.

Ng was initially registered for the 2025 season curtain raiser which begins at the Axiata Arena from Jan 7-12, but the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) have since withdrawn his name.

“His progress is good but we don’t want him to just go and play. We want him to be at his best and to do well.

“Kenneth (Jonassen) will start work on Jan 5 and he will monitor Tze Yong’s condition. He will most likely not be able to compete in January,” national men’s singles coach K.Yogendran told The Star.

Ng, who has since dropped to 192 on the world rankings, suffered a back injury at this year’s Malaysia Open and had to undergo back-to-back surgeries.

The Johor-born has only played one full match this year, and has spent the most parts of the year on the sidelines trying to regain full fitness.

Ng has a protected ranking of 18 granted by the Badminton World Federation, and will need to make his comeback in the first few months of 2025 in order to play in top-tier events.

On a brighter note, Yogendran added that the 24-year-old has been making steady progress in training.
