The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) have made a big move by appointing Rexy Mainaky as their deputy coaching director to work alongside national chief Wong Choong Hann.

Rexy previously served BAM as their men’s doubles coach in 2005 and was instrumental in the rise of former world number one pair Koo Kien Kiat-Tan Boon Heong.

The national body said in a statement the former Olympic and world champion would add technical input into key performance areas and be specifically attached to the doubles’ department when he begins duty on December 1st.

“We are delighted that Rexy will be joining the coaching team. This appointment is integral in reinforcing the progress that BAM has made in the last few years in our unwavering pursuit for success.

“Rexy is a good and experienced coach with a stellar track record. He will be given specific key performance index to revitalize and further motivate our young doubles departments,” said BAM president Tan Sri Norza Zakaria.

The 53-year-old previously served with the Philippines’ Badminton Association as head coach, before leaving home to Indonesia to become their high performance director.

Rexy later joined the Thailand Badminton Association in 2017 and helped their women’s team reach the Uber Cup final for the first time in their history.

As a player, the Indonesian was one of the best in the business, forming an unshakable partnership with Ricky Subagja that saw them dominate the men’s doubles scene for more than a decade.

Rexy would become the fifth Indonesian in the national team, joining Flandy Limpele, Indra Wijaya, Hendrawan and Paulus Firman.
