National mixed doubles veteran Chan Peng Soon announced his resignation from the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM), barely a year after he returned to the national set-up.

Joining Chan out of the BAM stable is current partner Cheah Yee See, along with Peck Yen Wei.

“I will officially quit the national team in late November. I enjoyed my time with the young players and coaches but the time has come for me to move on and think of my future.

“I will continue to grow my career in a new direction,” said Chan.

The 34-year-old returned to the national body in December after splitting with long-term partner Goh Liu Ying.

One of his roles as a senior member of the team was also to be a mentor to the younger shuttlers, but on court he struggled to find chemistry with any of them.

He first partnered Valeree Siow, before being reassigned to Toh Ee Wei and most recently Cheah.

In his 14 tournaments this year, Chan’s best result came at the Commonwealth Games when he reached the men’s doubles semi-finals with Tan Kian Meng.

But he missed out on a medal after the pair lost to Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik in the bronze medal match.

While Chan’s exit may have been forthcoming, Cheah’s resignation came as a blow as the shuttler was seen as one of the national body’s more promising shuttlers.

The 26-year-old won the SEA Games silver medal with Hoo Pang Ron this year.

“I am sad to leave the national team but I also need to consider my future,” she said.

The BAM, in a statement, thanked the shuttlers for their services and hoped they will continue to serve the country in team events when called upon.

Earlier this year, Lee Zii Jia also tendered his resignation with the national body.
