National women’s doubles pair Pearly Tan-M.Thinaah put themselves in contention for a medal at the Paris Olympics after the Malaysians crushed their opponents in straight games to reach the semi-finals.
Tan-Thinaah were imperious in their 21-12, 21-13 triumph over South Korean’s Kim So-yeong-Kong Hee-yong, and the dominant victory takes them into the last four for a meeting against China’s Chen Qing Chen-Jia Yi Fan on Friday (2.30pm Malaysian time).
The Malaysians may have lost in the group stage against the world number one pair, but they will be completely different opponents when they face the Chinese again.
Against Kim-Kong, Tan-Thinaah dominated from start to finish to come away with the one-sided victory.
The world number 10 South Koreans never got going from the start, with Tan-Thinaah surging into a 7-0 lead in the first game which gave them enough cushion to take the lead.
Tan was on fire as she netted some fine winners throughout the contest, and coupled with Thinaah’s dogged determination the Malaysians were never in danger of losing control of this match.
The world number 13 pair have now also made history by becoming the only Malaysian women’s doubles pair to have reached an Olympic semi-finals.
