Rexy compares Lee Chong Wei Cup to top-tier World Tour event

Rexy Mainaky has compared the on-going Lee Chong Wei Cup (LCWC) to a top-tier World Tour event, with national coaches scouting for upcoming talents to be included into the junior programme.

“From our meeting with President Tengku Zafrul, it was decided we needed more talents from the grassroots, as badminton is massive in Malaysia. So for the LCWC, we have coaches here who are watching and scouting.

“In terms of its organization, I would say the LCWC is at the level of a Super 300 or Super 500 event (on the BWF World Tour). It’s well organized and everything is planned professionally.

“From my observation, we have already identified eight to nine players. I have asked Wong Pei Tty (national women doubles coach) to list up the names to be given to Kenneth (Jonassen, national singles chief). From next year we are recruiting players aged 13-14.

“I hope we will see more Lee Chong Wei’s from this tournament,” said the national doubles coaching director with a laugh.

The LCWC has entered its Grand Finals stage, where winners from the three-day qualifiers go up against state-selected shuttlers from the national setup.

This premier age-group competition (Under-13, U15 & 17) will run for nine days and conclude on Sept 6.

This event will also be broadcasted live on Astro for the final three days beginning on Friday.
