National women’s doubles pair Pearly Tan-M.Thinaah booked their berth at the Paris Olympics quarter-finals after they notched a fine 21-18, 21-9 victory over Indonesians Apriyani Rahayu-Siti Fadia Ramadhanti.
It was a magnificent victory from the Malaysians, who will accompany Chinese top pair Chen Qing Chen-Jia Yi Fan into the last eight from Group A.
This victory was a testament to Tan-Thinaah’s resilience, having lost their first match against Chen-Jia last Saturday.
The world number 13 pair needed to win both their remaining matches, and did so in some style.
After coming from behind to beat Japan’s Mayu Mayu Matsumoto-Wakana Nagahara on Sunday, Tan-Thinaah came into this match against the Indonesians with confidence and they started aggressively.
Tan-Thinaah were on the front foot and attacked their opponents whenever they found the gaps, but the Indonesians defended well to stay in the game.
But Apriyani-Ramadhanti’s resolve wilted towards the end of the first game with unforced errors, leaving Tan-Thinaah to take the crucial lead.
That proved the defining moment, as the Malaysians were comfortable throughout the second game as Apriyani-Ramadhanti caved in tamely.
Tan-Thinaah will wait to find out their quarter-final opponents following the completion of the group stage matches.
