Former national shuttler Ong Ewe Hock is a staunch believer in giving people an opportunity, he recently revealed how he initially joined the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) as a helper.

Speaking to Tatler Asia https://www.tatlerasia.com/power-purpose/others/serdang-badminton-club-ong-ewe-hock , Ong said : “I just came in to help with whatever they needed, sparring, picking up shuttlecocks. From there, I learned a lot by watching others train and picked up the sport,” said Ong, who got the opportunity through his older brother Ong Ewe Chye.

Now 53, the former national men’s singles shuttler stepped foot into the national association 40-years ago when he was 13.

He joined the BAM training sessions during the school holidays as a way to spend his time wisely following his mother’s death.

Through keen observation and a newfound passion for the sport, Ong would gradually work his way into the system to become one of the country’s most established men’s singles shuttler.

During the height of his career, Ong helped Malaysia to three Thomas Cup silver medals, alongside an Asian Championships silver and two Asian Games bronze medals.

His individual achievements include becoming two-time Malaysia Open champion in 1996 & 2001.

Now the owner of the Serdang Badminton Club, Ong believes in giving others a chance, just like how he was given one.

“We should always give a chance to those who really want to play badminton to pursue their goals.”

Ong has previously helped former national shuttler Soniia Cheah qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics after she was dropped by BAM.

The Penang-born is currently coaching several ex-national shuttlers, most notably Jacky Kok whom he has high ambitions for.

But as much as he is willing to help, Ong knows the road to success is made up of pure hard work.

“The key to becoming successful is to push your limits. Good players, a majority of top-players are self-motivated. They know what they want and how to push themselves. Only then will you level up.”
