Ng Tze Yong faces an anxious wait to find out the extent of his back injury after the national men’s singles shuttler withdrew just 13-minutes into his Malaysia Open match against Koki Watanabe yesterday.
“The doctor did a scan to assess the injury after he got injured, and we are still waiting for the doctor’s report. Ng is still in pain, we are not sure if it’s a muscle tear or something else.
“This is a big blow that he got injured in the first event of the year on home soil,” said national coaches Tey Seu Bock and Rexy Mainaky.
The world number 15 may also be forced to skip the India Open next week if he fails to recover in time.
Ng was trailing Watanabe 8-12 when he decided to withdraw after feeling pain in his hips from his overhead smashes.
His exit ultimately ended Malaysia’s interest in the men’s singles after Lee Zii Jia had also lost to Lu Guang Zu on Tuesday.
