Iskandar Zulkarnain reported for duty at the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) this week as the new national women’s singles head coach aims to revive that department.

The former national men’s singles shuttler checked into work on Monday as he prepares for a challenging task of elevating arguably the weakest department in the national set-up.

“One of the main reasons for me joining BAM is due to Kenneth Jonassen, who called me personally to take up this role. For the first two weeks I will analyze the squad first, before going into more focused planning on attacking and speed for the shuttlers.

“The plan is for the players to undergo a more intensive training regime with shorter sessions, but involving more sets to boost intensity. We need to focus on quality over quantity in training so that the sessions do not become stale,” he said.

The 34-year-old will have 17 shuttlers at his helm, comprising of nine seniors and eight junior shuttlers.

Iskandar’s big target this year would be to guide the contingent at the SEA Games in Thailand.

Prior to taking up this role, Iskandar was serving with the Ireland national team as their singles coach.

His biggest achievement would be credited to the rise of Ireland’s national men’s singles shuttler Nhat Nguyen, now ranked 28th in the world.

Nguyen thanked Iskandar for his role, saying the Malaysian helped him develop as an athlete and a person.

Iskandar’s career achievements include helping Malaysia win bronze medals at the 2014 Asian Games (team event) and Thomas Cup.

He also finished second at the 2016 Malaysia Masters after a straight game defeat against Lee Chong Wei.
