Canadian women’s singles shuttler Talia Ng is relishing her time in Malaysia, describing it as having the “best vibes” among four countries she trained at.

Ng had trained at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) for two weeks ahead of her next tournament at the Thailand International Challenge.

When asked for an interview request, the 21-year-old was more than happy to oblige, and looked pleasantly surprised with the reception she was getting from the local media.

“Back in Canada, we do not have a national training centre like this. Everyone trains at their club, and because of the distance we are not that close as a team.

“Where I train, it’s just me and my coach, so it can get boring at times. It’s not like here, where everybody knows each other. I like it here, everyone is friendly and the training facilities are great.

“Plus there are sports scientists to advice on how many reps we should do at the gymnasium. I’ve trained in countries like China, Hong Kong and Thailand and the vibes are the best here,” Ng told Stadium Astro.

The world number 53, who got the offer from Malaysia coaching director Wong Choong Hann to train at the ABM, is currently the third highest ranked Canadian women’s singles shuttler behind Michelle Li (15th) and Wen Yu Zhang (52nd).

She picked up the sport at age nine through her father, and embarked on the professional athlete trail after winning second place in her first-ever tournament.

Ng won two titles last year, starting the year off with the Uganda International trophy before she followed that up by becoming the Canada Senior National champion.

She was also romantically linked to Malaysian shuttler Ng Tze Yong.

When asked if they were together, Ng replied with a smile: “We are good friends.”
