The Badminton World Federation (BWF) cancelled two events from their already congested calendar, calling off the Swiss Open and European Championships.

The Swiss Open and the European Championships were originally scheduled from March 17th-22nd and April 21st-26th respectively before the COVID-19 pandemic forced both competitions to be postponed.

With over 20 events scheduled for five months from August to December, the grueling calendar meant players would not have any break once the season resumes.

It remains to be seen if the world body would cancel more events, after players and coaches voiced their concern about the demanding scheduling.

Badminton is also set to resume behind closed doors for the rest of the season.

All-England champion Viktor Axelsen, while disappointed not to have an atmosphere, feels the show must go on regardless.

“It is going to be a completely different experience. I haven’t played a tournament without fans in a long time.

“It might feel like a practice session. The fans create an atmosphere which is really special. It is going to be disappointing, but it’s better than not playing at all,”Axelsen told English channel Wion.
