Tan Bin Shen insist he will leave the national team with only good memories despite being denied the ideal farewell following the exits of the men’s doubles pairings at the Malaysia Open.
Three Malaysian pairs crashed out of the 2025 season opening semi-finals, including Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun who was the last pair standing to give Tan the perfect send-off.
But despite the shortcomings, the 40-year-old will look back at his four-year stint at the Badminton Association of Malaysia with fondness, as he prepares to depart to Hong Kong for his new role.
“I started coaching the players in lower-tier events such as the International Challenge.
“Now, players like Choong Hon Jian-Haikal Nazri are Super 300 champions. Aaron-Wooi Yik have also achieved so much under my guidance, including becoming world champions and also winning a Super 750 event,” he said.
Tan will join the Hong Kong national team as one of the men’s doubles coaches, alongside two other Malaysians Jeremy Gan and Loh Wei Sheng who will be part of the setup.
Tan has big hopes for his upcoming role.
“I will be going there for the experience and to get a feel of a new culture. Hopefully this stint will make me a better coach in the future.”
Herry Iman Pierngadi will take over from Tan as the new national men’s doubles coach.
The Indonesian boast an impressive resume having produced a number of world class players such as Chandra Wijaya-Tony Gunawan, Ricky Subagja-Rexy Mainaky and Mohammad Ahsan-Hendra Setiawan.
“Herry is an established coach with a good track record, it’s good for Malaysian badminton,” said Tan of his incoming successor.
Tan will start work in Hong Kong after the Chinese New Year celebrations.
