Asia Team Championships: Malaysia through to quarter-finals

The Malaysia national men and women’s teams checked into the quarter-finals of the Asia Team Championships in Manila on Thursday, despite contrasting results in their group matches.

The men’s team thumped India 4-1 to finish as Group B champions, while the women’s team also qualified despite a 3-2 defeat to Japan as there were only two countries in Group W.

Lee Zii Jia gave Malaysia a 1-0 lead when he downed World Championships bronze medalist B.Sai Praneeth 21-18, 21-15.

Men’s doubles pair Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik soon made it 2-0 with a similar margin victory over Arjun M.R/Chirag Shetty.

K. Srikanth managed to pull one back for India after he came from behind to beat Cheam June Wei 14-21, 21-16, 21-19.

But Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi restored the two point lead with a 21-14, 21-14 win over Dhruv Kapila/Lakshya Sen, and Leong Jun Hao wrapped up the victory by upstaging Prannoy Kumar 21-10, 21-15.

The women's team had played earlier in the day and looked to throw up an upset when Soniia Cheah shocked Akane Yamaguchi 21-16, 13-21, 21-18.

Yuki Fukushima-Sayaka Hirota restored order after a 21-11, 21-15 triumph over Chow Mei Kuan/Lee Meng Yean.

Sayaki Takahashi then gave Japan the lead with a 21-18, 21-12 over Goh Jin Wei, who was playing in her first competitive fixture in months after returning from a stomach surgery.

The defending Uber Cup champions sealed victory when Nami Matsuyama-Chiharu Shida overcame young duo Pearly Tan-M.Thinaah 21-15, 18-21, 21-16.

S.Kisona ensured Malaysia would have another point when she overcame world number 19 Aya Ohori in straight games 21-14, 21-13.

They next play Chinese Taipei in the quarter-finals.
