Zverev canters to Italian Open fourth round while Moutet upsets Rune

Zverev, the defending champion, has now won nine consecutive matches in Rome and was largely untroubled in his 86-minute contest.

After a challenging start to the year, the number two seed is pursuing his second trophy of the season, having triumphed on home soil in the Munich Open last month.

Zverev will next face Arthur Fils in the fourth round.

"I didn't play my best in the first set but [Gaubas] challenged me," Zverev said after the match.

"I have huge respect for guys coming through qualifying and guys coming through on Tour. I have been there myself, a long time ago, but I have been there. He is playing great tennis, and I am sure we will see more of him."

Zverev’s next opponent Fils battled back from a slow start to run past Stefanos Tsitsipas 2-6 6-4 6-2, marking his fifth fourth-round appearance at a Masters 1000 event.

Fils, 20, has reached a career-high number 14 in the ATP rankings and was able to close out the victory against Tsitsipas in one hour and 55 minutes.

Corentin Moutet earned his first top 10 win by defeating Holger Rune 7-5 5-7 7-6 (7-4) in a marathon three-hour, 44-minute match.

Moutet will next face Jack Draper, who saw out a 6-4 6-3 victory over Vit Kopriva.

In defeating Kopriva, Draper celebrated his 100th tour-level win.

Daniil Medvedev dispatched Alexei Popyrin 6-4 6-1.

The match between Rune and Moutet is the longest played at the Italian Open from the third round onward since the 2006 final between Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, which lasted five hours and five minutes.
