Lee Hup Wei created history as he became the first Malaysian athlete to qualify for an event's final at the World Athletics Championships.

The 32-year-old, who was the only Malaysian competing in Doha with the country's only wild card entry, smashed his personal best in the men's high jump qualification on Tuesday.

Lee, who finished first at the SEA Games thrice and Asian Championships once, recorded 2.29m on his final attempt after failing to clear the bar twice.

Despite being just shy of the national record of 2.30m set by Nauraj Singh Randhawa in 2017, it was enough for him to be among the 12 high jumpers competing in the final on Friday.

He would be up against stiff competition, including defending champion Mutaz Essa Barshim, who recorded 2.35m two years ago and had a personal best of 2.43m, and 2018 Asian Games winner Wang Yu.
