Wolff felt like he had three drivers during the Australian Grand Prix

Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff felt like he had three drivers during the season-opening Australian Grand Prix after closely tracking the progress of Lewis Hamilton alongside those of his own team.
Hamilton had been at Mercedes for 12 years before leaving for Ferrari at the end of the 2024 season, having won six of his seven Drivers' World Championships with the former.
Italian teenager Andrea Kimi Antonelli replaced Hamilton to become George Russell's team-mate and both made a decent start at the weekend, finishing fourth and third respectively.

But alongside the performance of those two, Wolff acknowledged that he was distracted by another name during the opening race.
"When I was looking at the screens, at times, the way I looked at it is like we had three drivers because I was looking at RUS, I was looking at ANT and I was looking at HAM," said Wolff, speaking about the three-letter abbreviations for each driver.
"And then you realise, well HAM is actually with Ferrari and is not with us anymore."
Hamilton's first race for Ferrari did not go so well, finishing 10th after qualifying in eighth – team-mate Charles Leclerc, meanwhile, finished eighth. Despite both parties having moved on, Wolff suggested that the emotional investment in Hamilton is still there.

"It was such a long time, it's logical, you cannot just say he's gone, and you don't care anymore.
"You very much care how he's doing but obviously on track, he's the competition and we need to beat the competition."
From a team perspective, Wolff was pleased with the start they made after having struggled to challenge in each of the last three seasons.
"I think it's a solid first weekend, but looking at it always from the glass half-empty side, you have to say that the pace of the McLaren is just very strong," said Wolff.
"We need to get better if we want to fight on merit for race victories and for a championship, there is definitely something which we need to find."
