West Indies paceman Alzarri Joseph came out to bat on the third day of the second Test against England in Antigua, despite the death of his mother.

Joseph was given a great ovation by the crowd and England players, wearing black armbands as a mark of respect, joined in the applause when the quick came to the wicket just hours after losing his mother Sharon Joseph.

Windies manager Rawl Lewis said in a statement: "It is with great sadness that we have been informed that Sharon Joseph, the mother of our young fast bowler Alzarri Joseph, has passed away.

"We know that this will be a very sad and difficult time for Alzarri and his family.

"But we hope that it brings him comfort to know that his grief is shared by us all – his team-mates and support staff of the Windies team – and we would like to extend our deepest sympathies to him and his family."

Joseph arrived at the wicket after James Anderson struck twice, with the Windies leading by 102 on 289-8.
