Wigan Warriors closed in on a home Super League play-off semi-final with a 25-10 victory over Wakefield Trinity on Thursday night.

The Warriors have already secured a top-four spot in the Super 8s and they continue to edge ever closer to a precious home tie after battling past the already-eliminated Wakefield.

Oliver Gildart set the tone with an acrobatic finish in the opening minute, but Wigan shared the scoring around, with the exception of the typically influential Sam Tomkins who kicked well from the bench.

Sam Powell added to the home lead before Tom Johnstone responded just two minutes after Wakefield were hit by a Matty Ashurst yellow card.

Tomkins sent over a drop goal on the stroke of the interval, but the visitors continued to threaten an upset as Bill Tupou closed the deficit to just three points midway through the second half.

But the visitors' ill-discipline counted against them and Scott Grix headed to the sin bin before Morgan Escare and Joe Greenwood rounded out a fifth successive win for the Warriors.
