Elaine Thompson-Herah broke new ground by becoming the first woman to complete a 100 and 200m double at consecutive Games on Tuesday.

There was also an astonishing world record-breaking effort from Karsten Warholm in the men's 400m hurdles.

For Stats Perform's man on the ground in Tokyo, Peter Hanson. Tuesday was a struggle to keep warm while he inadvertently made a new friend feel awkward.

To find out why, read on in the latest version of the Tokyo 2020 Daily Diary.

TUMBLING ON THE WAY TO WITNESS HISTORY...

I've been genuinely lucky to witness history over the past few days thanks to the brilliant Thompson-Herah, who became the first woman to defend both sprint titles.

It was another memorable evening as the Jamaica sprint star posted the second fastest time ever to take out the 200m title.

Speaking of being taken out... I nearly stacked it twice prior to witnessing this brilliant feat. The first occurred when I kicked a sort of raised platform that I didn't spot, stumbled for around five steps and just about kept my balance.

If that wasn't bad enough then around half an hour later, on a visit to the gents, I slipped on the stairs back to the concourse and had to reach out to stop myself from face-planting...so very, very clumsy.

IT MIGHT BE TOO HOT...

I managed to catch the back end of some of the men's 1500m heats this morning in Tokyo.

All I could think was "rather you than me lads".

It was almost touching 35 degrees at times this morning in Tokyo. For reference ladies and gents, I'm 5'8'' and around 20 pounds overweight.

Fair to say I am not built for this heat...fair play to the middle and long-distance runners taking part in this!!

OOOH, DANISH FRIEND!

Anyone following this diary from the start will know I palled up with a journalist from Denmark last week when watching Simone Biles at the gymnastics.

We've stayed in touch and a couple of times met up in the MPC, it's been really quite nice...only I keep making things a little uncomfortable. Accidentally I should add!

It's force of habit to offer a handshake, but obviously these are still COVID times and fist bumps are more the order of the day.

My new pal exclaimed: "You keep offering out the hand...it's so awkward! Maybe one day we can do that again." I hope so, my friend...if only to spare myself looking a little foolish.

WELCOME BACK SIMONE

I was at the Ariake Gymnastics Centre last week when Simone Biles had to pull out of the women's team final.

Since then she has spoken about her battle with her own mental health and those disclosures have been brave and inspiring.

To see her compete again at these Games was a great moment for everyone. That she placed third in the balance beam final is great testament to her courage.

Afterwards Biles revealed her aunt died this week, yet once again used her platform to promote the importance of protecting mental health.

"It's something that people go through a lot that is kind of pushed under the rug," she said. "I feel like we're not just entertainment, we're humans as well and we have feelings."

Well said, Simone.
