Malaysia's men basketball team might miss out on the 3x3 basketball semi-finals at the 2019 SEA Games after a poor first day.
They started off on the right foot with a 21-11 win over Myanmar on Sunday morning, but 18-20 and 17-20 losses to Vietnam and Thailand respectively put them outside the top four of the group stage to qualify for the knockout phase.
The team of Tem Zhen Jie, Wong Chin Yong, Loh Shee Fai and Chin Zhi Shin must come out on top against the unbeaten Philippines, Cambodia and Indonesia on Monday if they want to avoid an early exit.
As for the Malaysia women's basketball team, they are in a better position with group stage wins against Vietnam and Myanmar, despite suffering a close 13-15 defeat to the host nation.
A win against Thailand or Indonesia on Monday should see them through to the semi-finals.
3x3 basketball is contested for the first time in SEA Games history this year.
