Phee Jinq En bagged a gold medal in the women's 50 m breaststroke event by the closest of margins at the 2019 SEA Games on Friday.

The 21-year-old, who set a new Malaysian record in the preliminary heat of 31.40s earlier in the morning, matched her record time to beat Thai swimmer Jenjira Srisa-Ard and Singapore's Christie Chue by 0.01s and 0.03s respectively.

In the previous edition in Kuala Lumpur, Phee set a time of 31.54s en route to a silver medal in the same event.

Meanwhile, national team-mate Alicia Li Ann Soosai, who won gold at the recent Malaysia Open Swimming Championships, finished eighth with a time of 33.24s.

Her victory was Malaysia's first gold and fourth overall in swimming events in the Philippines - she also won bronze in the women's 200m breaststroke event earlier.

As for the other medals, Welson Sim clinched silver in men's 400m freestyle, and the men's team contributed a bronze medal in the 4x200m freetyle relay category.
